Now I Know my ABCs” Lecture by Children’s Book Expert Leonard Marcus
TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 27 Children’s book author and historian Leonard S. Marcus will present a lively and entertaining lecture “Now I Know my ABCs: Children’s Alphabet Books through the Years” at Winterthur Museum & Country Estate on Tuesday, November 27 at 6 p.m. In addition to being learning tools, alphabet books have long served to showcase the artistry of the finest illustrators for children. Among the artists to be featured in this illustrated talk are Thomas Bewick, Kate Greenaway, C. B. Falls, H. A. Rey, Dr. Seuss, Alice and Martin Provensen, Maurice Sendak, Chris Van Allsburg, Lois Ehlert, and Edward Gorey. Following the lecture, Marcus will sign copies of his latest book, Golden Legacy: How Golden Books Won Children's Hearts, Changed Publishing Forever, and Became an American Icon along the Way a celebration of the beloved Little Golden Books series.
Marcus, a contributing editor to Parenting magazine since 1988, is the author of several popular children’s books, including Oscar: The Big Adventure of a Little Sock Monkey, a collaboration with his wife, the picture-book artist Amy Schwartz. The lecture takes place during “Fashionably Late at Winterthur,” a series of Tuesday evenings when the museum remains open until 9 p.m. for Yuletide tours, dinner, and shopping. Admission is $15, adults; $13, seniors and students; $5, ages 2-11; and $5, members and includes entry to Pets in America: The Story of Our Lives at Home with Animals and K is for Kids.
