Free admission for children under 12 years old
Winterthur, DE August 15, 2007-Winterthur welcomes families to Enchanted Woods, which will be transformed into a "Child's Garden of Verses" on Sunday, September 16, to celebrate children's literacy through the books of acclaimed author Jane Yolen, Honorary Ambassador of the K is for Kids* exhibition, which opens that weekend.
Enchanted Woods will feature activity stations at locations throughout the three-acre children's garden, each with a theme based on a Jane Yolen book, including treasured favorites like Owl Moon; Child of Faerie, Child of Earth; Shape Me a Rhyme, All in the Woodland Early, and Fine Feathered Friends. Families are encouraged to pack a picnic to enjoy.
"A Child's Garden of Verses" takes place on the final day of GardenFair, which features dozens of destination nurseries in one location, offering a wide array of unique and distinctive plant materials. Exhibitors from across the country will offer everything from heirloom seeds to premium perennials, and aquatic plants, as well as garden furniture, garden tools, outdoor décor, and art. Admission wristbands, valid for day of purchase and subsequent days, cost $15; free for Winterthur members. Children under 12 are free but need a wristband.
Yolen, the author of more than 200 books, will team with Winterthur to celebrate children's literacy. Winterthur plans a series of special events and programs throughout the exhibition's run that will focus on literacy and children's literature.
Enchanted Woods invites visitors, both children and adults, to explore and play in an enchanted world while learning about nature and the environment. Located within the larger garden on Oak Hill, where the two daughters of H. F. du Pont had their swings, the garden has several play areas to climb in, on, and over, including a Tulip Tree House created from a large hollow tree that once stood at Winterthur's back gate, a Faerie Cottage with a thatched roof, and an Acorn Tearoom for pretend tea parties.
