The publication last year of the first volume of William J. Bennett's history of the United States was a major cultural event. As Brian Kennedy of the Claremont Institute put it, we've lately been fed bilge-water history, whereas Bennett “offers to Americans young and old an exciting and enjoyable history of what makes America the greatest nation on earth.”
And now comes Volume II, which takes up the story where we left off—on the eve of World War I—and brings us up to the present day—to the War on Terror and beyond. Once again Bill's engaging narrative slices time, memory and prevailing cynicism to re-invigorate America with an informed patriotism. And what does that mean? Well...try imagining the modern world without America. We may have struggled as a people over the last century, but our struggles—and our failures and successes—remain a beacon to the world. As Bill writes:
"We need to remember every fallen American soldier and citizen in this war—including those in our first battle against the 9/11 attackers, those brave citizens—soldiers on United Flight 93 who took over a hijacked airliner and saved as many lives as possible.
Memory is important to our country. It is critical to sustain it, honor it, and love it. The words engraved at the top of our National Archives building speak to why—'The glory and romance of our history' are preserved there."
Glory and romance are, indeed, the 230-year-old story of who we are and what we have done."
Walter Isaacson, author of the bestseller, Benjamin Franklin: An American Life, said it best: “The role of history is to inform, inspire, and sometimes provoke us, which is why Bill Bennett's wonderfully readable book is so important.... Every now and then it's useful to be reminded that we are a fortunate people, blessed with generations of leaders who repeatedly renewed the meaning of America.”
