Fasten your seat belt for Jonathan Kellerman's new thrill ride that kicks into high gear when Alex Delaware, “detective fiction's best-loved shrink” (Kirkus Reviews), is drawn into a case involving a stolen Bentley. The expensive automobile has been recovered with a smear of blood on the seat that matches the type of a missing young woman, although Katrina Shonsky's wealthy mother makes a point of saying this isn't the first time her spoiled daughter has disappeared. Yet Alex and Det. Milo Sturgis fear it could be the last when, days later, a top-of-the-line Mercedes is spotted at the site of an elderly woman's brutal stabbing.
At first the only connection between the two women appears to be the killer's penchant for expensive wheels until a witness to the woman's murder is willing to swear the killer was wearing an obvious disguise. When some of Katrina's friends recall that she once ridiculed a guy trying on women's clothing in a high-end boutique, Alex recognizes they may be dealing with a deviant personality ruled by his compulsions. But while such behavior is right up Alex's professional alley, does that mean that he, like the victims, is also heading for a dead end?
