Few people can forget Dreamgirls or Jennifer Holiday's performances of “And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going.” Now, author Denene Millner has penned the dramatic novel based on the play, which is soon to be a film with an all-star cast!
Effie White, Deena Jones and Lorrell Robinson are three friends from Chicago looking to make it big in the music biz who call themselves “the Dreamettes.” Along with Effie’s brother—and their songwriter—C.C. White, the girls travel to New York City. Their manager Curtis Taylor, Jr., discovers them while they’re working as backup singers for superstar James “Thunder” Early. Unfortunately for them, Curtis talks them into doing a lot of things they’re not comfortable with, including crossing over from R&B to pop music. What makes matters worse—if not for their careers, but for their friendship—he convinces them that the most talented but least attractive of the girls, Effie, should sing backup, with gorgeous Deena fronting the group. Eventually, the strain is too much and Effie gets dropped from the group. What will it mean for the other girls…and will the three friends ever be able to find their way back to each other and what really matters most?
