Anyone who works homicide knows the time will come when one case will bring you to your knees. Detective Bobby Dodge is still haunted by his, although the madman who tortured a young girl—and nearly killed him—is mercifully dead. Now, after leaving the Boston PD to become a State homicide detective, Bobby’s former lover, Sergeant D.D. Warren, begs him to take a look at a crime scene that brings it all back. Bobby feels overwhelming rage and sadness upon viewing the mummified bodies of six little girls unearthed on the grounds of a mental hospital, until a major clue hanging from the neck of one—a locket inscribed with the name “Annabelle”—leads to yet another shocker…
The headline-making murders have prompted the real—and very much alive—owner of the necklace to come forward, and while Annabelle Granger couldn’t ask for a more sympathetic listener than Detective Dodge, his beautiful partner is openly hostile. If they’re doing a good cop, bad cop routine, she’s glad the great-looking guy is on her side. Indeed, Bobby listens intently as the lovely young woman explains her childhood on the run and how one time, before her parents whisked her away yet again, she gave her locket to her best friend. Annabelle never learned why her father, dead for many years, kept her in hiding. But she has no doubt the little girl in that grave was supposed to be her. Bobby agrees the killings are linked to Annabelle’s past. Just as he’s equally certain she has every reason to still be afraid…. Explicit language.
