I love forensic thrillers, and I love historical novels, but I never suspected that the two would ever intersect. Thankfully, I was wrong. Cross an episode of CSI with The Canterbury Tales, and you’ll have something like the profoundly chilling Mistress of the Art of Death. ?Much like Chaucer’s tale, a prior, a monk, a tax collector, a prioress, a nun, and a knight return from the Crusades—only here, one of them is a deranged killer of children.

After a fourth child is found murdered, Henry II desperately summons a “doctor of the dead” from Italy in the hopes that he can prove to his blood-hungry populace that the local Jewish community is not responsible for such vicious acts. But much to Henry’s dismay, they don’t send a “he.” Forensic pathologist Adelia Aguilar is used to people doubting her skills, or worse, trying to hang her as a witch. But these worries soon pale when she comes to realize that she’s dealing with an enemy far more evil—and far closer to the King—than she ever expected.?

Like Kay Scarpetta in a wimple, Adelia is bold, brilliant, and a worthy subject for at least 10 more books. I can’t wait until we see her again.
