Join American Compass for a great deal on ONE NATION, ONE STANDARD
Herman Badillo's life is a true American success story. An orphan living in crushing poverty in Puerto Rico, he came with his aunt and cousins to the United States. Young Herman quickly started up the ladder, doing well in school and becoming a leading New York Democrat. But this is not all a happy story. Badillo also ruefully tells how policies he supported backfired—notably bilingual education, which, mishandled, has helped deny to the younger generation the great public-school education Badillo himself enjoyed.
And all this is related to the very different legacies of the Spanish conquest and the English colonization of the New World. One Nation, One Standard is a highly readable mixture of memoir and policy analysis, by a man who is not afraid to rethink even deeply held positions.
