Government can’t make us happy. A government can facilitate our pursuit of happiness, but the outcome of this Great Pursuit cannot be assured by any law or policy. Joel Miller’s concern is simple: “If we agree with the founders that the government’s job is to…foster environments where…[the] pursuit [of happiness] is possible, then what do we say when the government itself jeopardizes happiness and stands in the way of our pursuit?”
We say: Stop! And we’re saying it a lot. Miller tells remarkable stories of individuals whose dreams of fulfillment and fortune have been shattered by bureaucrats who exist only because the scope of government is so vast. We all know there are no tyrants like little people with little minds, what Jefferson called “swarms of officers.” Did you know that the Feds now employ nearly 20-million people? Forget about the tax implications (all those salaries!) and consider that these people are engaged in implementing laws and regulations, any one of which may be justified, but which in their entirety equal oppression.
