If I could jump out of this magazine right now and press one book into your hands, it would be Matt Haig’s wonderful and imaginative novel THE DEAD FATHERS CLUB. I loved it! I hate comparing books to others, but just to give you a quick feel for what this novel is all about, think The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime meets William Shakespeare’s Hamlet. It works.
This touching and quirky novel centers on Philip Noble, a smart and funny 11-year-old boy who is going through a very rough time. His dad has recently died in a car accident. As young Philip grieves this terrible loss, his father appears to him as a ghost and introduces his son to The Dead Fathers Club, a spectral fraternity whose members just happened to haunt the Castle and Falcon, a local pub owned by Philip’s family, and who have all been murdered. Murdered? Dad explains that what looked like an accident was really a plot by Philip’s uncle Alan to usurp him from the family, get in good with Philip’s mom, and take over the family pub. And wouldn’t you know it? Dad wants Philip to avenge his death.
But what does an 11-year-old boy know about revenge, especially when he’s dealing with a crush on a pretty girl, class bullies, and his own insecurities? Is his Dad even telling the truth? What unfolds is a delightful and witty story about loss and growing up and finding your voice when so many obstacles are trying to silence you.
I hope you take a chance on this book and if you love it, please tell your family and friends about it and start of wave of enthusiasm about one of the best—and most underappreciated—novels of 2007.
