Dr. Laura is a known entity—an institution, even. And yet she always comes up with new ways to bring to life her central insight: that the way to a happy marriage, for men and women alike, is to think less about our own needs and more about our spouse's. In The Proper Care and Feeding of Marriage, she uses as her running theme the wonderful O. Henry story “The Gift of the Magi,” in which a young husband and wife each sell a prized possession in order to buy a gift for the other.
In some of the stories Dr. Laura recounts from her radio listeners and her clients, the gifts are indeed objects. In others, they are gifts of understanding, of time, of patience. Whatever the gift, one of Dr. Laura's listeners gratefully sums up what he has learned from her: “The more I give, the more I get.”
