Join American Compass for a great deal on WHY I TURNED RIGHT
However bad the news on the political front, the conservative intellectual movement is thriving. Wondering why, the Hoover Institution's Mary Eberstadt asked a dozen younger writers about their political journeys. Their stories are as varied as they are.
David Brooks started out as a socialist; Rich Lowry's conversion was from an intuitive to a philosophical conservatism. For some the turning point was a positive event—becoming a parent (P.J. O'Rourke, Danielle Crittenden), studying with Allan Bloom (Tod Lindberg). For others it was negative: Richard Starr turned right in reaction to Jimmy Carter, Heather MacDonald in reaction to deconstructionist Paul de Man. The one thing these 13 (counting Ms. Eberstadt herself) have in common is that they tell their stories uncommonly well.
